This semester has been quite the whirl wind. I went through a lot with family and school. My classes were very enjoyable this semester, but some kept me ridiculously busy in comparison to others. The highs mainly had to do with the experiences I had with my friends these past few months. I have gotten closer with a lot of them and wouldn’t change a single thing about what we’ve done together. The lows are soon to come next week. Even though I am a fourth year, I will be the only one out of my group of friends to not graduate next Saturday. I decided to invest a great deal into school by having two majors and a minor, so it’s a trade-off by not being able to make that walk across the stage with the people who I have been here with for four years. As far as next semester goes, I know that I will have to devote 100% of my time and attention to school, and school alone. I will be a lot more lonely, but that will only give me more of a drive to put towards class work and trying to get out of here. I also want to do well so that by this time next year I can hopefully have an internship/job offer, because I do NOT want to move back in with my parents.

SEE YA PRCA 3330!!

I’M GOING TO DISNEY WORLD NEXT WEEK! YAY!!!

The 2012 baseball season started recently. Are you a fan?  Fan or not, if you worked for the public relations team at one of the 30 major league teams, what would you suggest to entice people to come to a game? Special prices? Giveaways? Be specific in what you would do. Remember, it’s easier to have fans in the seats when your team is winning. Therefore, come up with two plans: one, if the team is doing well and a second, when the team is in a slump.

If we’re being honest, I couldn’t care less about sports. I can’t even bring myself to pretend to like sports in front of guys. It just bores me to death. However, if I worked for the PR team in the major leagues, I would get people to come by giving away free stuff. Everyone loves free stuff. More specifically, college aged fans love coozies and t-shirts. I would also have stuffed mascot animals for kids to give away. When the team is not doing so well, I’ll have prizes assigned to certain seats with  season tickets, or something like that to benefit the fan, as well as supporting the team.

If you had the resources and the time, where would you want to travel? Why? What is it about the location(s) that make it desirable for you to want to visit?

IRELAND!! If I had no responsibilities for a week and a higher number in my bank account, this would be the place I would travel to. I am of Irish descent (if you couldn’t already tell by my ridiculously Irish name – Caitlin Brooke McIntosh). My grandfather was so into our heritage that he often wore a kilt and actually knew how to play the bagpipes. Ireland is known for its simplistic beauty with endless amounts of green fields. I’m a sucker for a great landscape because of my interest in photography. I try to find the most beautiful, yet simple, aspects of nature, and I know that Ireland has just that. Also, I’ve always wanted to walk into an old Irish pub in a small town and befriend the oldest/most Irish people in the place. I love old people, and Ireland, so this would be the best traveling experience I could think of.

So the Twitter Assignment weeks is over! I think this past week was a great way to get to know my other classmates a little better, as well as learning some helpful public relations tips from the professionals we followed. Twitter does take some getting used to, but I have had mine since last semester for PRCA 2330, so it gets more and more enjoyable each time I use it! I do have to say, I have never tweeted as much as I did this past week for the assignment.

What I got out of this Twitter assignment was a more hands-on understanding of what the social media can do for an individual professionally. Making connections and networking is key to being successful, especially in this field, so this was a great gateway to the endless possibilities.  The professionals we had to follow for the assignment are very well aware of the type of employees they are looking for, and Twitter makes it easier to get a real look at those candidates. I will definitely be continuing my Twitter account. For now, it will mostly be used socially for my friends, but within the next year I plan on using Twitter to search for possible career choices. Continuing my Twitter account would be the best move if I plan on getting a career in the public relations field, or in my majors marketing and logistics, as well.

All in all, I enjoyed the experience that came along with the Twitter assignment. I think it was a great way for the students to become more involved in various areas public relations, all the while keeping us interested in the task at hand. When used correctly, Twitter can open so many doors for involvement, recognition, and career opportunities. However, it is key to remember that what you tweet can effect you either positively or negatively.

If you attended the PRSSA Regional Conference a couple of weeks ago, some of this should sound familiar to you. As you all know, there are several generations in the workforce today from Civics to Boomers to Gen X to Millennials. According to one of the speakers at the conference, Jenny Schmitt, knowing the differences in the generations “affects nearly everything – what motivates you, what you value.” How would you, as a Millennial, who has practically grown up with technology and social media, convince someone in a different generation that social media can be effective (if employed properly) to their business?

If I had to convince another generation I would focus on the availability aspects of social media. Of course there is email and the phone, but social media offers the ability to communicate, as well as advertise, all tied into one. Advertising and communication is key to the developmental side of a business. Social media just makes it easier for that to happen. So many people are involved in social media networking these days. If a business tweets or posts an update about a sale going on, the opening of a new chain, etc., the followers are instantly notified. Getting information fast can help the business prosper with the competitive advantage of availability.
